Indonesia lies right on the equator in southeast Asia. It is made up of more than 17,500 islands. Halmaher is the largest island. Boreno is the 3rd largest island in the world. About 2/3 of Indonesia is forested and much of the land is covered by mountains. The average temperature is 80˚F. The total area of Indonesia is 735,358 square miles, and it has a coastline 22,888 miles long. The highest point is Puncak Jaya at 16,503 feet.

The population of Indonesia is 239,781,000. 51% of the people live in the country and 49% live in the cities. While there are more than 300 language spoken across Indonesia, the official language is Bahasa Indonesia. For religion there are 87% Muslim and 10% Christian. They do Batik art and find it very interesting. They do Javanese puppet plays too. They also love weaving. The official name of Indonesia is the Republic of Indonesia. They have a population density of 326 people per square mile. There common dish is Nasi Goreng. I want to visit Indonesia some day! It sounds fun!

The Republic of Indonesia became an independent nation on August 17, 1945. Indonesia singed their constitution on August 17,1945. Indonesia has 33 provinces and the capital is Jakarta.Their first president was President Sukarno.There national anthem is "Great Indonesia".During WWII Japan took over Indonesia. Their current president is President Susilo Bambang.The money they use is the Indonesian rupiah.They farm for coffee, palm oil, rubber, sugar cane, tea and tobacco. They produce petroleum, tin, gas, nickel, timber, bauxite, copper, fertilizer, soils, coal, gold and silver. There highest court is the Supreme Court.

People have been living in Indonesia for more than 4,500 years. In the 1200's, the Indonesian island became part of a large trading route. Portuguese, English and Dutch explorers arrived in the 1500's. By the 1700's, the Dutch took over the trading. In the 1900's, Indonesia got some independence. When WWII was going on, the Japanese took over Indonesia. When 1949 came around Indonesia became independent! In the 1950's, Indonesia became the 60th member of the United Nations!
